The Pornographers
Subu makes pornographic films. He sees nothing wrong with it. They are an aid to a repressed society, and he uses the money to support his landlady, Haru, and her family. From time to time, Haru shares her bed with Subu, though she believes her dead husband, reincarnated as a carp, disapproves. Director Shohei Imamura has always delighted in the kinky exploits of lowlifes, and in this 1966 classic, he finds subversive humor in the bizarre dynamics of Haru, her Oedipal son, and her daughter, the true object of her pornographer-boyfriend’s obsession. Imamura’s comic treatment of such taboos as voyeurism and incest sparked controversy when the film was released, but The Pornographers has outlasted its critics, and now seems frankly ahead of its time.
The Serpent
During his military service, a man meets a woman who works in the kitchen at the camp and they start a relationship. When the man is out on combat exercises, he becomes a witness to his Sergeant being paralyzed by a snake.
The Queens
Four unrelated short comedies by four different directors. "Queen Sabina" chronicles the sexual misadventures of a teenage girl on the road home. "Queen Armenia" centers on a self-serving opportunistic gypsy babysitter who uses her employer's kids for her own gain. The third episode, "Queen Elena" centers on a husband who learns a lesson about the perils of infidelity after he succumbs to the wiles of the seductive wife next door. The last vignette, "Queen Marta" centers on a wealthy woman who, when drunk, uses her butler as an outlet for her lust.
The Cook
Based on the play of the same name by Anatoly Sofronov.
In one of the Kuban collective farms, a new beauty-cook has appeared. Many began to look after her, but the girl was not a timid dozen and quickly gave a turn to the unlucky boyfriends from the gate. However, true love found a way to her heart, and although human envy and stupidity have done many troubles, the lovers still managed to unravel this complex tangle of misunderstandings.
The Search
Manuel Jacques Perrin is a young man from the country who tries to make it in Madrid in this somber melodrama. He struggles to survive in the unforgiving city where only the strongest will prosper. Manuel defends himself and kills a murderous thief in a fight then quietly waits for the police to reach the scene of the crime.
